High quality compost production from using horse manure and cow manure at a public compost center (Introduced to: Houki Town, Tottori Prefecture)

In this case, a compost center makes effective use of horse manure and cow manure to produce high quality compost, continuously operating in the black

PlaceHouki Town, Tottori Prefecture
Processed Material and Amount1,500 tons per year of horse manure and cow manure
OverviewIn this case, a compost center makes effective use of horse manure and cow manure to produce high quality compost, continuously operating in the black.

Measures and Effects

Build new equipmentBy combining horse manure and cow manure generated in the town, producing high quality compost, and returning this compost to farm land, they improved soil fertility.
Reduce the amount of auxiliary materials usedBy using horse manure as a substitute for auxiliary materials, they operate the plant without buying wood chips or other materials.
Evenly mix materialsBy uniformly mixing materials with different properties then fermenting them, they have succeeded in producing very high quality compost.

This compost center was newly built in 2003. They combine horse manure and cow manure to produce very high quality compost.

The town has a training center where JRA racehorses are trained, and there are many ranches in the town. Materials from these facilities are evenly mixed and fully matured for composting at the compost center.

This facility produces 1,500 tons of compost per year, but by using C-Mode and EasyJet, it can be operated by only one manager.

The inside of the facility is a highly hygienic environment, and there are no foul odors.

It has a simple equipment configuration and easily used layout, so it still operates with the same capacity even 10 years after it was built.

The temperature in the area is about -10˚ C in winter, but it keeps a high fermentation temperature even in such conditions.

This facility is also distinguished by its low annual operating costs, and the cost of the facility is covered by just income from sales. It is a publicly operated compost center, but it continues to operate in the black.

Compost from this facility has been highly praised by locals, and they are proud to make stable shipments year round.

Measures and Effects

Build new equipmentIn order to further increase already strong compost sales, they built a new compost building with the goal of increasing compost production.
Save laborIn order to increase production volume without having more than a single worker, they introduced equipment that does not require any effort to be done to turn over the compost.

The compost center was built in 2003, and its compost sales have remained strong, so they expanded the compost building in 2009 as a way to further increase compost production.

However, they wanted to still have just a single worker, so they decided to install EasyJet in the new compost shed.

Materials are deposited in the fermentation tank, and composting is completed by simply leaving them there. Therefore, the process requires little work, and they succeeded in increasing production without adding more staff.

They were able to shorten the fermentation period compared to the conventional turn over method, helping the compost center to increase production and save labor.
