- The challenges were ensuring high-temperature fermentation even in winter temperatures of -10 to -20℃, having a facility that does not produce odors since it is close to a tourist area, and providing equipment that is easy to maintain as management would be outsourced.
Overview of Composting at Composting Center in Biei Town, Hokkaido
Currently, Japan generates 2.2 million tons (dry weight basis) of sewage sludge annually, but only about 25% is utilized as biomass (2015 Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism).
The phosphorus in sewage sludge amounts to 50,000 tons, which is equivalent to about 10% of Japan’s import volume. Therefore, further utilization of such resources is being sought.
In response, Biei Town, Hokkaido decided to build a composting facility to utilize sewage sludge.
During the planning, it was required to ensure high-temperature fermentation even in winter (outside temperature -10 to -20℃), have a facility that does not produce odors due to its proximity to a tourist area, and provide equipment that is easy to maintain as management would be outsourced.
Composting Process
Sewage sludge generated at the town’s wastewater treatment facility is transported to the composting facility in sealed containers. The moisture content is about 83%.
Add auxiliary materials (return compost) and mix using C-mode for composting.
The compost material is piled in a high-pressure aeration (Easy Jet) fermentation tank and fermented for 42 days.
Fermentation temperatures of over 70℃ are maintained even in winter, allowing for stable operation throughout the year.
The finished compost is odorless, with a moisture content in the 40% range, and is easy to handle.
The compost produced at this facility is used in town facilities and horticulture.
About Odor in the Composting Facility
The odor measurement results are as follows.
Ammonia was slightly detected directly above the fermentation tank, but no other odors were detected.
Odor Measurement Results | Measurement Locations and Results |
Ammonia | Above the fermentation tank 5-6 ppm, directly below the ventilation fan 2 ppm |
Methyl Mercaptan | Above the fermentation tank and directly below the ventilation fan 0 ppm |
Hydrogen Sulfide | Above the fermentation tank and directly below the ventilation fan 0 ppm |
Introduction of the Product
