Pig Farm Instantly Removes Odors from Compost! (Client: Chino Farm)
This case study highlights how Chino Farm solved the issue of livestock manure odor by switching from sawdust deodorization to porous glass deodorization, achieving instant odor control.

- Livestock Manure (Approximately 2,000 pigs)
- Issue
- Suppressing odors from livestock manure produced by a closed-type stirring composting system
Before Installation (Sawdust Deodorization)
The farm, which raises approximately 2,000 pigs, had been deodorizing sawdust using a conventional sealed agitation method (compost), but the odor caused by livestock manure was hardly removed.
They had been looking for other deodorization equipment and treatment methods to deal with the bad odor emitted from the compost.
After Installation (“MIRAIE Biological Deodorizing Equipment” (Porous Glass Deodorization))
Upon switching from sawdust deodorization to the MIRAIE Biological Deodorizing System (porous glass deodorization), the change in odor was immediately noticeable. The odor concentration, initially around 2,000 ppm, was reduced to a constant 200 ppm, leading to the realization that the new system was truly effective.
About the Porous Glass Deodorization
In livestock production, there are two sources of odor: barns and composting sheds.
For composting barns, which process manure with particularly strong odors, some use closed vertical fermentation equipment, while others use heavy machinery or agitators to cut back and supply air for sedimentation and fermentation. In either method, the gases in the early stages of fermentation have a high concentration of sulfur compounds, ammonia, and other malodorous substances, so special attention should be paid to odors during the cut-back operation.
With conventional deodorization using common wood chips or sawdust, the deodorizing effect decreases with time of use, and the labor and cost incurred when replacing the substrate material is a very significant management burden.
MIRAIE’s porous glass deodorizers are several times more effective in removing odors than conventional deodorizing base materials by fixing bacteria to the base material in high concentrations, and do not require replacement of base materials for almost 10 years.
