Large-Scale Sludge Treatment Facility Composting with Low Running Costs and Short Duration Even in Extreme Cold! (Client: Hokkaido/H Company)
Sludge from a sugar factory is composted through increased fermentation temperature even in the extreme cold of Hokkaido. The facility minimizes heavy machinery use, achieving operations with fewer personnel and machines. This case study demonstrates reduced running costs.

Overview of Composting at the Facility
Hokkaido is a major sugar production center, accounting for over 80% of the domestic sugar output. However, recycling the sludge generated during sugar production has been a challenge. Due to issues such as fuel costs exceeding 10 tons per month, rising heavy oil prices, and increased processing volume, the facility decided to build a new treatment plant.
Despite the extreme cold, with temperatures dropping to -30°C in winter, the facility efficiently composts the sludge.
By minimizing heavy machinery operations, the facility operates with fewer personnel and machines, reducing running costs.
Introduction of “C-Mode” and “Easy Jet”
This facility does not use heavy machinery for preparation,
Mechanical mixing by mixing equipment 【C-Mode】.
Aeration with the high-pressure aeration system【Easy Jet】.
The composting process was to be carried out using the above two methods.

Sludge Mixing with “C-Mode”
The C-Mode was introduced for pre-treatment before composting.
Mixing with the C-Mode uniformly blends and granulates the sludge, allowing air to enter and start fermentation immediately. This approach reduced processing time and running costs by 90%.
Stable Composting in Winter with “Easy Jet”
The sludge is then moved to the EasyJet unit, where forced air is supplied throughout the compost. This method ensures smooth fermentation with minimal turning required.
No matter how low the outside temperature is, the temperature rises smoothly with Easy Jet, and when combined with a blower, fermentation temperatures of 80℃ or higher can be achieved even in wintertime Hokkaido. The composting process is completed in 28 days without interruption.
Eliminating heavy oil costs, the facility now significantly reduces processing costs to only the electricity for Easy Jet and fuel for machinery.
Composting Facility with Reduced Running Costs
As a result, the facility has achieved a reduction in fermentation period, significant cost savings through labor reduction, and high-quality compost production. Initial investments and maintenance costs have been successfully reduced.
